The National Documentary Seminar 2016 for filmmakers, students, and technologists will take place Sept 26th and 27th at Cinemateket USF. Scott Rettberg and Roderick Coover will present CRchange projects, collaborative methods, and practices that mix digital writing and filmmaking practices in the service of narratives that resituate contemporary problems in artistic frameworks.

The theme of the two day seminar is “Can virtual reality change reality?”

Monday 26. September
Thematically, the seminar continues where last year left off, with virtual reality, interactivity, immersive storytelling and trends within film and art, such as how the VR technology can influence journalism and documentarism, with a focus on VR as an empathy generator. VR storytelling is also used by humanitarian organisations to create empathy with people who are in crisis.

Tuesday 27. September
Day two of the seminar will deal with the crossover hybrid film. With hybrid film, one typically means documentaries that use fiction elements, staged events and re-enactments as a part of the storytelling. There are several examples of this in this year’s festival program, often stylized and extraordinary documentaries that are in the borderland to the visual arts.

At the seminar, we wil meet the filmmakers behind some of this years’ best films within this category which is not new, but has flourished in popularity in recent years. Based on their own films, the filmmakers will show clips and give an insight into their methods.
